10th anniversary and evolution ...

In 2021, the Australia and New Zealand Photobook Awards reached their tenth anniversary under the stewardship of Momento Pro. On this occasion it is time to hand over the reins to our friends at Photo Collective in Australia, and Photobook/NZ in New Zealand. These organisations share our deep appreciation for photo books, and are committed to continuing our support for antipodean creators and showcasing their work far and wide. Our sincere gratitude goes to you both and we look forward to seeing the awards grow under your care.



The Photo Collective: Australian Photobook Awards




The new custodians of the Australian award are the Photo Collective, and their Australian Photobook Awards will now sit alongside their Australian Photography Award for images and STORIES Award for photo series and essays. We have no doubt they will flourish under the care of photography advocates Tom Goldner and Harriet Tarbuck, and we look forward to our continued association with the award, as Momento Pro will remain the major prize sponsor. The Awards are open for entry from 8 November 2021 until 23 February 2022.

It seems a fitting transition following the hosting of the Award ceremony and exhibition at their biennial festival, and our combined efforts to developing closer connections amongst the photo book community across the ditch. The Australian & New Zealand Photobook Award history

The Australia & New Zealand Photobook Awards were hosted by the Sydney-based print-on-demand photo book company Momento Pro from 2011 and 2021. The Award celebrated excellence, originality and 'fitness for purpose' in photo book creation, and the $110,000 in cash and print prizes distributed to 142 finalists helped local artists progress their photographic career and produce publications. 17 books were produced with the print credit prizes and the exhibition travelled to 17 destinations as far afield as the Vienna Photobook Festival and Photo Ireland. The winners were announced on Friday 6 March 2020 at the Photobook/NZ festival opening night, hosted at Te Papa in Wellington, New Zealand by the legendary Spanish photo book maker and Magnum member, Cristina de Middel.

Judging & Criteria

The judges are experts in photography, picture editing, publication design and photobook production, who review the digital and physical books to assess the:

The judging panel consists of Australian and New Zealand based judges, and one international judge. The international judge reviews the digital files only and participates in the physical judging via video.

Due to the small and close knit antipodean photobook community, some judges may have an association with an entry. The Judging Chair and Award Coordinator will ensure that judges are unable to score or comment on entries they have an association with.

The People’s Choice Award goes to the finalist who receives the most votes from visitors to the finalist exhibition.

Judging Chair: Ann Shelton
Massey University, Te Kunenga Ki Purehuroa, University of New Zealand

Ann is an internationally recognised photo artist, and Honorary Research Fellow in Photography at Whiti o Rehua School of Art.  Her work comprises large-scale, hyper-real photographic works and her most recent research engages with plant narratives and histories. Her first solo exhibition in the US, Jane Says was presented at Denny Dimin Gallery, New York in 2019, while her past work In A Forest has been shown in London, Berlin and Spain. She has also published several photo books including: Dark Matter, A Library To Scale, Redeye, A New Skin and Room Room. Shelton has a BFA from Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University, and an MFA from the University of British Columbia.


Ángel Luis Gonzalez Fernandez
Founder & CEO of Photo Ireland

The PhotoIreland Foundation is dedicated to stimulating a critical dialogue around photography in Ireland and to internationally promoting the work of Irish-based artists. The Foundation hosts the PhotoIreland Festival every July, and runs The Library Project, a bookshop, gallery and resource housing 2500+ photo books from 250 publishers worldwide. Ángel won the David Manley Entrepreneur Award in 2011 for the PhotoIreland Festival project and has been a portfolio reviewer at Les Rencontres d'Arles, Format Derby and PhotoEspaña.


Rachel Knepfer
Picture Editor, Creative Director & Producer (Australia)

Born in San Francisco, Rachel has lived and worked in Sydney and in New York, as a photography editor, curator, teacher, advisor, and producer. After graduating from Sydney College of The Arts in 1984 she worked for a picture book publisher and photographers' agency. She moved to New York in 1990 and worked as the Director of Photography at Rolling Stone Magazine (NY), with photographers including Mary Ellen Mark, Mark Seliger, Peter Lindbergh, Dan Winters, Herb Ritts and David Lachapelle. She now lives in Sydney, freelancing on photography and film projects, and teaching for the Australian Centre for Photography. Rachel recently put together the Art for The Wilderness auction.


Claire Murdoch
Head of Publishing, Penguin Random House NZ

With over 18 years’ experience in the ANZ book trade, Claire has a passion for non-fiction and illustrated books, including biography and memoir, history, Māori and Pasifika, art, design and photography. Her past roles include picture researcher at Sydney's The Photolibrary, Publisher at Te Papa Press, and more recently, product and audience development leader at Radio New Zealand. She has worked closely with senior cultural leaders, journalists and artists, to bring their stories to life and has, "refreshing and progressive ideas for local publishing." Claire is also the training and development liaison for the Publishers Association of New Zealand.


Scott Bundy
Founder/Creative Director, Bundy Agency

Scott has a passion for photography that tells a story and communicates a strong message. For over 30 years, he has worked with some of Australia’s finest commercial, fashion and portrait photographers. His has been photographing since the age of 21, and since then has guided major shoots for BMW, Australian Cricket, Qantas, The Australian Formula One Grand Prix and Australian Defence Force. Working in advertising, digital and design, Scott brings a different set of eyes to the judging panel.

  Remote Photobooks

Photobook NZ

Photobook/NZ is New Zealand’s national photobook festival, celebrating small press photobooks. The next biennial event takes place from 4 to 8 March 2020 in Wellington. The festival will feature the Australia & New Zealand Photobook Award ceremony and exhibition, a masterclass with Cristina de Middel, Anna Brown and David Cook, a book fair, and presentations by Matthew Casteel, Daniel Boetker-Smith, Jono Rotman and Perimeter.


PHOTO 2020, international festival of photography

PHOTO is a new biennial international festival of photography running from 23 April to 10 May 2020, in collaboration with over 25 cultural institutions in Melbourne's CDB and across regional Victoria. It will showcase photography from Australia and around the world through exhibitions and artist commissions, as well as talks, screenings, masterclasses and education programs. The festival will also host our Award exhibition, an interview with the 2019 Photobook Award winner, as well as talks and book launches by past winners.


The Antipodean Photobook

The Antipodean Photobook is an online resource dedicated to information about the art, practice and history of the photobook format in the Antipodes – Australia and New Zealand - founded by Australian academics and photo book artists, Dr Doug Spowart and Victoria Cooper. The duo also coordinate the Award exhibition and and accompany it to some of its destinations including Brisbane, Hobart, Canberra and Adelaide. They often host workshops and presentations about the practice and history of creating antipodean photo books.


Studio 541

Studio 541 is an art gallery based in Mount Eden, Auckland, that supports and encourages emerging and established artists from differing disciplines, through exhibitions, workshops, and discussions in the area of photography and fine art. Studio 541 has previously hosted an Award ceremony and exhibition, and in 2020 they will be hosting the judging session, as well as the exhibition.


Unless You Will Studio

Unless You Will, founded by photographer-curators Heidi Romano and Alana Holmberg, is a creative studio specialising in design and communications for the photography industry. They provide a range of high-quality services related to social media, website design, branding, media relations and marketing strategy to artists, galleries, agencies, online platforms and cultural institutions. In 2020 they will provide a 2-hour consult to the Photobook Award winner tailored to the winner's specific marketing needs.


Paper Journal

Paper Journal is an online and print magazine, and event host, that presents the best in contemporary visual arts and photography, care of contributors from Melbourne, London, NYC and around the world. To help boost the profile of antipodean photo books and their creators, we've teamed up with founder and editor, Patricia Karallis, to publish an interview with the 2019 winners in the Paper Journal March edition. 

PhotoIreland - The Library Project

Run by PhotoIreland in Dublin, The Library Project is a bookshop, photobook library, and gallery that showcases local and international artists with a focus on contemporary photography and photobooks. The Library Project will host the Australia & New Zealand Photobook Award 2019 finalist exhibition, and all past winning books, in 2020.


Remote Photobooks

Founded in 2015 by Anita Tótha, Remote Photobooks distributes photo books and photo-related publications from established and emerging creators and independent publishers in New Zealand. Harvey Benge, Bruce Connew, Shelley Jacobson, Simon Devitt, Allan McDonald, Chris Leskovsek, Solomon Mortimer, Ann Shelton and Yvonne Todd.

How do the Awards define a 'photobook'?
A photobook is a publication that focuses on photographic content presented in a visual narrative.


Does the book need to be previously published?
No. The book can be unpublished, self published, trade published, or published via an academic or cultural institution.


Does the book need an ISBN?
No, an International Standard Book Number is not required.


Can the book be published overseas?
Yes, as long as the photographer is an Australian or New Zealand citizen, resident or student at the time of publishing.


What format is required for the digital book file?
A low-resolution PDF less than 200MB. Individual JPEG files will not be accepted.


How can I submit a digital file if my book was not digitally created, it was handmade?
Video or photograph each page or spread of your book. Submit the video via our Hightail account. Convert your pages from jpegs to a single PDF before uploading via the Entry Form or Hightail account. You can use the Momento Pro software to layout and sequence your jpegs into a single book file.  To use Momento Pro's software, register with Momento Pro then download the software. After exporting the book design, upload the Master.MBF file to your Momento Pro account then email Contact our service team for more details or assistance.


What if you experience issues uploading your file via the Entry Registration form?
Submit your file via our Hightail account instead, including "ANZPA entry," your name and book title in the Message field, then email


Is a physical copy of the book required?
Yes. You must submit a physical book. The book can be printed via any print service or process.


Does the book need to be printed by Momento Pro?
No. It can be printed via any method or service. Should you wish to print a copy with Momento Pro a 30% discount is available for standard book orders that will be entered into the Award. Standard book orders must be placed by phone before 5.00pm on 20 January 2020.  Please note that Custom book orders are not eligible for a 30% discount. Custom orders must be placed by phone before 5.00pm on 6 January 2020. The time is based on AEST in Australia or Wellington time in New Zealand.  Details and due dates are listed below.


Can the book include images by more than one photographer?
Yes. Photobooks including work by multiple photographers are eligible but details of all photographer credits must be entered in to the Entry Form and all photographers must meet the Entrant Requirements listed above.


Can the book include found or archival imagery?
Yes, as long as they meet all terms and conditions listed above.


Is there an entry fee?
Yes, there is an entry fee for entrants to the Photobook category. There is no entry fee for entrants to the Student category. Entry fee revenue will assist with the administration of the Awards.


Can international students enter?
Yes, if they were enrolled at an Australian or New Zealand institution between 1 Jan 2018 and 31 Dec 2019, and meet the Student Category Entrant requirements.


Can I submit more than one book?
Yes, you can submit up to three books.


Will I receive feedback on my book?
No. Due to the number of entries we’re unable to provide feedback on every entry.


Will my book be returned?
This is an acquisitive award. Books will be returned to non-finalists who include a prepaid, self-addressed envelope with their book submission. Winner and finalist books will remain in the Award archives for public access and exhibition. We also encourage entrants to submit a copy to the Asia Pacific Photobook Archive.



Momento Pro book discount

Entries can be printed via any method or service. Should you wish to print a copy with Momento Pro, we offer a 30% discount on standard books that are entered into the Awards. This applies to books from our standard Momento Pro book range. Custom orders are not eligible for this discount.

Orders must be placed by phone with our Customer Service Team in Australia or by our Service Representative in New Zealand. Custom book orders must be placed by phone before 5.00pm on 6 January 2020, while Standard book orders must be placed by phone before 5.00pm on 20 January 2020.  The time is based on AEST in Australia or Wellington time in New Zealand.

Orders will not require payment for delivery as the finished book will be submitted directly to the Awards. Should you wish to view your book prior to submission you will need to order by 6 January 2020 and pay for delivery.
